Gail Boerema[1] has taken the position of vice president-finance and chief financial officer at The Lutheran Home and Harwood Place, Wauwatosa.

Boerema, most recently spent seven years as CFO at Jewish Senior Living.

She answered some questions for the Milwaukee Business Journal.

Education: Bachelor of arts degree in accounting, Mount St. Clare College, Clinton, Iowa; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) certifications

What attracted you to this new opportunity:“Lutheran Home and Harwood Place is an excellent organization that has been providing top-quality services and caring for our seniors since 1906. I have been following what Scott McFadden, president and CEO, and his team have been doing over the past several years to continue to move the organization forward. I was excited to join Scott and his team based on his vision of excellence and their forward thinking.”

Thoughts on your position:“I will be leading the financial strategy of Lutheran Home and Harwood Place to ensure our sustained viability, so that we will be able to continue to provide the highest level of services and caring for our seniors. Working in health care/senior care is something that has meaning to me. It is satisfying to know, that collectively, we make a difference in people’s lives.”

First job: Bussing tables and washing dishes at a country club restaurant

Career advice:“Set goals, find your passion, stay true to yourself, strive for excellence, and give back to your community.”

Personal hero:“Active members and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who have served to provide the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Last book read:“What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” by Marshall Goldsmith

Person you would most like to meet: Jonathan Lucroy

Family: Ted (husband), Sam (son), Jena (daughter-in-law), Emma and Jackson (grandchildren)

Favorite vacation spot: Sanibel Island, Fla.

Most meaningful accomplishment:“Achieving my CPA credential was the springboard to my career. My accounting professor advised me early in my college life to go beyond my degree and secure a nationally recognized credential. It opened doors for me when we moved from Iowa and gave me access to a wide network of business leaders that have been instrumental in my professional development and career progression.”

Favorite film: Jason Bourne films

Favorite Milwaukee-area restaurant:“It is impossible to choose just one: Eddie Martini’s, Mason Street Grill, The Knick”

Likes about Milwaukee:“I like the diversity of things to do and places to go in Milwaukee like the theater, concerts, ballpark, dining, parks, lakefront.”

What you most like doing in your free time:“Gardening, walking, spending time with friends and family”
