First, their family expanded from their own four children when the couple gained temporary guardianship of Becky’s two cousins, who had been headed to foster care. Then, Eric was laid off from his corporate management job. They needed a solution, and fast -- and found one in a Liberty Tax franchise, after hearing the company CEO, John Hewitt, speak in nearby Virginia. “As soon as we heard John speak at the Virginia Beach Liberty Tax Open House, we knew this was something we could do,” Eric says. That certainly seems true enough. In four tax seasons the Elders have opened six locations and hope soon to have 10. “We want to grow this into a family business,” Eric says. “Actually, with all these kids, we need an empire.” Name(s): Eric and Becky ElderFranchise owned: Six Liberty Tax locations in Albany, Tifton and Cordele, GeorgiaHow long have you owned a franchise?[Eric responding] We purchased our first Liberty Tax Service territory in September of 2011 and opened our first location in January of 2012.Related: How I Bought My First Franchise With a Tax Refund [1]Why franchising?Becky and I always knew that we wanted a business of our own. However, because of limited resources, we thought this was an impossibility; we knew if we opened an independent business, we would have to start from the ground up and build everything on our own. Without brand-name recognition, we would have a hard time getting our name out there and earning the respect of our clients.Buying into a nationally branded business takes all the pressure off things.…

A Holiday Football Movie the NFL Won’t Recommend

Holidays are a big time for movie releases. Big stars headline movies slipping in at the deadline so they are fresh in the minds of Academy members as Oscar season begins warming up. This particular movie, Concussion, starring Will Smith, may not please the NFL or even high school coaches, but rumor has it that it’s going to leave their ears ringing. The first trailer, just released, is powerful and will hit hard… and may help a whole lot of young men understand why their parents worry at practices, games, and any time they hear the crunch of helmets hitting pads, the ground, and each other. Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist from Nigeria, was the first doctor to identify the horrific impact of repetitive head injuries on NFL players. Believe it or not, this discovery was made ten years ago. People spend more time discussing Deflategate than the consequences of this health threat. In repetitive head injuries, after the initial brain injury is resolved, damage remains. Multiple episodes of these traumas can result in significant neurological deficits. 1.6-3.8 million sports-related head injuries are sustained every year in the US. (NCBI) In football, a player may sustain thousands of further hits throughout the season. Many concussions are not medically diagnosed. Players want to play. They may tell their coaches whatever it takes to get back on the field. The response of creating safer helmets may provide a small amount of increased safety, but most high schools can’t afford to provide the helmets with the highest safety rating, leaving kids open to repeated injuries early in life. Dr. Omalu, after performing an autopsy on a 50-year-old ex-pro football player that was presumed to have died from a heart attack, questioned the cause of death, especially after hearing about serious behavioral changes…

Integrity in Question

Brian Williams let America down. NBC News trusted anchor, Brian Williams lied to us. He lied to us multiple times. When Americans turn on the evening news, they trust the anchorperson to deliver the true news. What happens when an anchor embellishes the news and betrays our trust? Williams was the face of NBC News until earlier this year when he was exposed as a liar. He had been continually exaggerating his experience in a US Army helicopter in Iraq back in 2003. His embellishments made his helicopter ride sound life-threatening and that he had been under fire. At the time, we worried about him. Now, we are stunned and disappointed. Even as he tried to explain himself, he couldn’t seem to make himself confess to an actual “lie.” Instead, he admitted to “a mistake in recalling the events.” This didn’t fly for viewers and Williams found himself suspended from the network. Williams was investigated thoroughly and found to have made numerous “mistakes in recall” over the years. Lester Holt was assigned as anchor of NBC Nightly News as the network, under Comcast rule, decided what to do with Williams. His suspension finally over, Williams has been invited back to NBC. He has been demoted and given a lower salary. He also has been ordered to make the rounds of NBC shows with real apologies. In his new role, Williams will be an anchor of breaking news and special reports at MSNBC. There are, as expected, those who feel Williams should not be back at the network, and certainly not involved in reporting the news. His role on MSNBC will be smaller and his ratings are expected to be small as well. Some employees at MSNBC are offended and feel like their network is the dumping ground for NBC’s trash.…

Recruiting Employees -- and Their Friends -- to Market Your Brand

Entrepreneur and CultureIQ are searching for the top high-performing cultures to be featured on our annual list. Think your company has what it takes? Click here to get started[1]. In the digital economy, the task of building a company’s brand is more complicated than ever. Unlike the 20th century, where advertising and marketing events defined and differentiated brands in the consumer minds, 21st century companies must compete in real-time among a sea of voices constantly fighting for attention from their audience.Related: What Does It Mean to Be a Good Brand Ambassador?[2]When that audience is constantly bombarded with messages from other marketers, it is easy for one company’s message to get lost in the mix or to be ignored entirely. Buying engagement is not the answer. While purchasing promoted ads on social properties may yield some impact, the process can become expensive, and the relationships ads generate are comparable to nothing more than a “warm call,” if not a cold call, among online shoppers and social networkers.Research shows that people are more likely to engage with a brand that's been recommended by someone in their networks. A study by the Ciceron brand advocacy firm found that 77 percent of consumers surveyed said they were more likely to buy a product when they heard about it from someone they trusted. The study also found that the "share rate" of content among those surveyed was eight times greater when that content was posted by employees than when it was posted by a company’s brand page. That makes sense: Content from personal connections is vetted by those with whom the consumer already shares a common interest, history, geography, occupation or other factor, making it more likely that the consumer will read information that is interesting or relevant to him or her. So, how can a…

Joe and Becky Cruse changing worship with new "worship school"

Husband and Wife Gospel Musicians Create Online School from Real World Experience for Students Seeking Work Force Skills without Financial Aid Today, education costs are higher than ever. And according to Joe Cruse, they are going to stay there for a while. Surging prices and debts have both educators and students looking to new ways of learning and, more importantly, proving to employers that what is learned will be useful in a competitive workplace. Joe Cruse had devoted his life to worship music. He spent two decades touring with The Cruse Family musical ministry. His musical career saw him record on 25 popular albums, and win two GMA Dove awards (an award given for outstanding gospel music). After becoming a Worship and Praise Leader at a church in Texas, he went on to tour again with a renowned evangelist and spread the message of his music even further. When Joe started Worshipworks Ministries International, it was intended as a way to pass on the most valuable lessons gained from his long and storied career. His mission was to find a way to help others find success in the same field he had done so well with, keeping quality and affordability always as the highest priority. “In my experience, those called to the ministry find it nearly impossible to obey God’s calling when student loan debt is hanging over their heads, and haunting them in every major decision they make.” said Joe. “Our philosophy is that a quality academic and spiritual education should be affordable to everyone.” Worshipworks is home to a unique business model within the online education community. They are the only organization to combine online courses with internships in hand-selected affiliate churches, employing a staff of eleven administrators and staff. Their previous career made the Joe Cruse and…

What's to Prevent Someone From Ripping Off Your Crowdfunding Campaign? Not Much.

Dawn Sole was hunting through her purse in a grocery store parking lot one day in August 2010 when she came up with the idea for the Pluck N’ File. She had chipped a nail while carrying too many groceries and needed to smooth out the jagged edge. First, she had to hunt around her purse for her nail file. Then, she dug around for her nail buffer. Finally, taking advantage of good lighting, she decided to clean up her eyebrows and went back into her purse for the third time looking for tweezers. It was then that she thought, why couldn’t these grooming tools be rolled into one, female Swiss Army knife style? She drove directly to CVS, bought a bunch of parts, and set out to invent what she had just dreamed up.After months of tinkering and countless manufacturing beta tests with companies based in China, Sole, who lives in Miami Beach, Fla., came up with a prototype she was pleased with. She decided to raise money via crowdfunding for her first real production run, turning to the most popular brand-name platform, Kickstarter. That was in September of 2013 and at that point, “personal care products,” including the Pluck N’ File, were not allowed to be featured on the crowdfunding platform. Since then, Kickstarter has loosened its rules[1], expanding its range of campaign categories. She poured everything into the campaign, having left her six-figure corporate job in October 2012 to focus full time on Pluck N’ File.“I took literally every penny that I had from my 401(k). I have been…
